Suzuki has Free Gas for Summer Promotion

by AnneFleming 29. April 2010 22:51
AutoRemarketing News, April 30, 2010

BREA, Calif. — To help its dealer body drum up sales, Suzuki is rolling out an incentive program that offers consumers three months of free gas during a period when finding ways to save on fuel can be crucial: summer.

Starting Saturday and going through Aug. 31, Suzuki is offering its "Free Gas for Summer" promotion, where consumers can receive three months worth of fuel for free when they buy a 2010 model in Suzuki's lineup.

Among the automaker's 2010 vehicles are the Kizashi, SX4 SportBack, SX4 Sport sedan, SX4 Crossover, Grand Vitara and Equato.

When the shopper purchases the vehicle, the person will be given a stored value debit card worth anywhere from $280 to $442, based on certain criteria.

Suzuki determines the value of the card that goes with each respective vehicle by considering the following:

—The vehicle's highway fuel economy, as estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

—The Federal Highway Administration's estimated average of 1,000 miles driven per month.

—The U.S. national average price of one gallon of regular gasoline as determined by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

"Suzuki recognizes the economic challenges Americans continue to face and thought this promotion was a great way to provide relief for car buyers," stated Koichi Suzuki, executive vice president of American Suzuki Automotive Operations.

"Working through our U.S. dealer network, we're happy to extend this program to consumers across the country, providing potential buyers even more reason to consider purchasing a Suzuki during the summer shopping season," the executive added.

Detroit's Opportunity is Our Financial Opportunity

by AnneFleming 29. April 2010 00:51
Thursday, April 29, 2010

It would be premature to declare that the Detroit 3 automakers are back, or even that their eventual recovery is assured. But almost a year after General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC had to rely on unpopular taxpayer bailouts and humiliating bankruptcy filings to stay in business, both companies are showing signs of turning a difficult corner.

That's good news for American families whose livelihoods depend on jobs related to these automakers.

Last week, GM said it had repaid $8.1 billion in loans to the U.S. and Canadian governments five years early. Chrysler made an operating profit in the first three months of 2010 and raised its cash reserves, enhancing the prospect that it can break even this year.

Most startling of all, a new poll reports that American consumers now say cars and trucks built by the Detroit 3 are of higher quality than vehicles made by Asian automakers.

These positive findings must be tempered by realism. The $6.7 billion that GM repaid the U.S. treasury is a fraction of the nearly $52 billion in bailout money it has gotten from Washington. Only when the company can sell shares to the public and the government can shed its 61 percent stake will GM be in a position to return that much larger taxpayer investment.

Despite its improved finances, Chrysler still lost $197 million in the first quarter and $3.8 billion last year after it emerged from bankruptcy. Its new partner, the Italian automaker Fiat, continues to struggle with challenges in its European market.

Americans' assessment of the relative quality of U.S.- and Asian-built vehicles may have as much to do with Toyota's recent, well-publicized safety issues as with consumer appreciation of the improvement in Detroit 3 cars and trucks, substantial as it is.

But if you're determined to look for good news, you'll find it. Overall vehicle sales are up, despite automakers' reduced reliance on expensive incentives. The U.S. auto industry is hiring again, largely among parts suppliers that had to shrink during the recession. GM is investing in its North American plants even as it continues to cut costs.

Chrysler can boast of green shoots as well. The automaker has elevated its manufacturing efficiency. Its new Ram Heavy Duty pickup is a hit. It could begin selling a version of the Dodge Nitro sport utility vehicle as a Fiat model in Europe.

Don't forget Ford Motor Co., which borrowed heavily to avoid following GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy. Eighteen percent of respondents in the poll on vehicle quality said Ford now builds the best cars and trucks, compared with 15 percent who favored Toyota.

Such signs of resurgence give the Detroit 3 a tremendous opportunity to boost their shares of the U.S. and global markets. Domestic automakers have had such opportunities before, and squandered them by focusing on short-term profits at the expense of long-term growth. They don't have that luxury this time.

As the economy slowly recovers, domestic automakers are leaner, more efficient and better led. They evidently no longer need to worry about an industry meltdown.

But their aspirations must be higher than that. They must build high-quality, fuel-efficient, attractive cars and trucks that consumers will choose to buy. If they do that, bankruptcy and bailouts will be scenes in the rearview mirror.

Lol no im nt bsy im only driving

by AnneFleming 27. April 2010 01:26

We learn to stay away from the hot stove at about age 2-3. “Don’t do that, you will get hurt,” a concerned parent says sharply. And, yet, not really sure if its true, our little selves reach up ever so close enough to a coil to see how very hot it is, and only then, do we run away. Knowing what not to do and the temptation to do it anyway has been an ongoing human behavioral trait.

We are frequently reminded that driving distractions cause accidents; and accidents kill.

Over the years, local and state governments have enacted countless laws to ‘protect’ drivers and pedestrians alike. It’s the law to buckle up, to have children in appropriate child restraint systems, to not drink and drive, to obey the speed limit, and to wear helmets in most (but not all) states when operating a motorcycle; but what good is a law when many dismiss or overlook it and have a “that doesn’t apply to me” attitude?

So it goes with texting.  In 2009, textsmart.org surveyed young adults between the ages 18-24.  The survey asked “Do you text while driving”?  Of the 200 young men and women (73 female and 127 male) who answered the survey,  40% of the females and 39% of the males stated that they text while driving, more than they should. Other research shows that it only takes a distraction of four seconds to cause a major driving disaster. This may seem like an insignificant amount of time but FlowData.com’s interactive driving game shows that 4 seconds is the average time a driver’s eyes leave the road when reading or writing a text message. To put that time in perspective, when travelling 55 mph a driver would cover the length of a football field in 4 seconds!

The American Medical Association says that texting while driving constitutes a public health risk and increases the amount of time the driver's eyes are off the road by 400%. This is an alarming figure. Additionally, a recent report released by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that when drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than drivers who kept their eyes on the road and their thumbs on the wheel.

What are our lawmakers doing about it? Several state governments have already passed legislation that prohibit texting while driving. Several other states, such as Pennsylvania and Ohio are currently reviewing legislation that will make it illegal to use hand-held devices while driving.  That’s right; that includes a cell phone, Blackberry, “smart” phone, i-Phone, and that wonderful new i-Pad. In an attempt to help remedy the problem some U.S. automobile makers have installed voice control mechanisms that allow drivers to operate electronic devices without taking their eyes off the road.

This is all a step in the right direction. However, enforcement, compliance and personal accountability are paramount. Unlike most other vehicular laws, texting is something most police enforcement personnel can’t actually see. Even though we know the dangers – we have read about the deaths, and preventable accidents, and we know about the penalties.  But what will it actually take for us to stop? How about simply taking the temptation away during your drive time, and focusing on driving carefully and arriving safely to your destination?

It’s really that simple of a choice.

by AnneFleming 16. April 2010 00:23

Check out the comprehensive state by state ranking from Insure.com just published.

Our state, Pennsylvania, ranks at 26th -- splitting the list in half.

Wow, only $1420 a year to 'protect' ourselves. Don't get me wrong.... insurance is practical and necesary. I am simply a 'numbers girl', and can you imagine spending $71,000 in your lifetime or more for the mere pleasure of driving your car? Oh, yea, we all do.

When was the last time you checked to get a new quote with your current insurance provider? If it’s been awhile, take a look at these tips to evaluate ways and areas where you can possibly save some money.

  • Shop around. There are a number of insurance companie’s that provide car insurance, and gaining access to the parent company or to the agents is very easy by doing some simple searching on the internet. Get at least 3-5 quotes and compare. An extra $25 or $30 a month can make a real difference.
  • Buy on-line. Many times if you buy a policy on line, versus speaking to an agent, you will save even more money.
  • Stick with nationally known insurance companies. If you are researching a company that is not well known, ask for their financial ratings and the number of complaints that have been made against them.

Ask for these discounts that may apply when shopping or buying car insurance; they can really add up and make a big dent in your premium payments.

Vehicle Safety Equipment Discounts:

  • Front & side air bags in front, passenger or back seats
  • Day-time running lights
  • Anti-theft devices
  • Keyless starter
  • Back up rear view monitor/camera

  • Car pooling
  • Women as head of household
  • College student living 100 miles away from home that does not have a car on campus

Put the savings in your pocket - and,

Ford Holding Auditions for Fiest Commercials

by AnneFleming 12. April 2010 22:29

From AutoRemarketing: Continuing with the grassroots-style marketing of its Fiesta model, Ford is looking for the "most unique and stylish individuals" to appear in an upcoming TV advertisement for the vehicle.

The automaker is holding the "Inspired by Color" casting call event this week at Howard University in Washington, giving everyday folks the shot at appearing in a national commercial.

During the event, which begins today and runs through Thursday, contestants can demonstrate their own style and how it connects to the 2011 Fiesta.

After the first day, the field of contestants will be narrowed down to 30 for Day 2. Eventually, there will be five finalists chosen.

The panel of judges includes R&B singer LeToya Luckett, eBay style director Constance White, Parrish Clothing founder Tony Shellman, Fiesta designer Kevin George and event host Kenny Burns.

"We wanted to create a unique program that truly embodies the spirit of the Fiesta," said Crystal Worthem, multicultural marketing manager at Ford. "This program allows us to tap into the distinct features and style of the vehicle in a way that is relevant to some of the target consumers of this vehicle.

"We are excited about the opportunity to hold such a massive casting call in a city that speaks fashion, while also bringing along some of the experts in the field of fashion to help us execute the program," she added.

Contestants were asked to go to www.fordurban.com to learn more about the Fiesta — including its technologies and features — and pick the color that "inspired them the most" and then dress in an outfit "they've been inspired to put together" for the event.

Though pre-registration has ended, the casting call is still accepting limited walk-ups today.

New York International Auto Show Mayhem

by AnneFleming 6. April 2010 05:09

By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writer Colleen Long, Associated Press Writer – Mon Apr 5, 7:01 pm ET

NEW YORK – Hundreds of young people spilled into midtown Manhattan near Times Square early Monday, brawling and shooting guns after the New York International Auto Show in an annual night of mayhem the mayor called "wilding."

Four people were shot and 33 were arrested, mostly on charges of disorderly conduct on the streets not far from the Jacob A.Javits Center, where the auto show is held. Three men and a woman were arrested later Monday on gang assault charges related to one of the shootings, police said. It wasn't clear whether anyone who fired shots was among those arrested. Another 23 were issued summons for disorderly conduct or were given juvenile reports and released.

It's not clear why the annual event often leads to violence in neighboring areas, but the police department had additional officers on patrol because of problems during past shows dating to 2003, chief spokesman Paul J. Browne said. Last year, there were 27 arrests on the same night. In earlier years arrest numbers ran in the low 20s, Browne said. A teenager was stabbed in a similar ruckus in 2006, and in 2007, another teen was slashed in the arm.

Browne described those arrested Monday as "young men looking for trouble" after the auto show.

The fracas rattled businesses near busy districts in Herald Square, as well as nearby Times Square, where an armed street hustler was shot dead by police after exchanging gunfire on the street in December.

"You know it's the cost of doing business," said Angus McIndoe, owner of the restaurant bearing his name next to Broadway theaters. "It's not the first time there has been nutty activity in Times Square."

Auto show spokesman Chris Sams said no one stood out as suspicious Sunday at the show, which runs until April 11 and attracts more than 1 million people.

"We had an amazing crowd, a very family-oriented crowd. The type of person who makes an auto show great, people listening to the presenters," he said.

Security at the show is tight, and officials work with police, Sams said. Visitors are checked when they arrive.

Most of the people arrested were men in their 20s from boroughs other than Manhattan. At least two were known gang members, Browne said; the four people arrested on gang assault charges — three men ages 17 to 23 and a teenage girl — were not believed to have fired any shots, police said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg described the night's events as "wilding," using a word created by the media during the notorious 1989 rape of the woman known as the Central Park jogger. Five men were charged with gang-raping her, but their convictions were thrown out in 2002.

"We loaded the area up with police, but they can't be everywhere," he said. "We're not going to tolerate it. ... This is just a bunch of people who shouldn't be on the streets if they behave this way, and we're not going to stand for it."

The Manhattan district attorney's office said 43 defendants were awaiting arraignment, but those included arrests made in other precincts that may be unrelated.

It was the second major instance of gunfire in the area in recent months, where police have worked for years to stop petty crimes and hustlers targeting tourists. Police and a street hustler armed with a machine pistol exchanged shots in December in Times Square — shattering a Broadway theater ticket window and scattering crowds — before police fatally shot the man.

Tourists in the area said Monday they weren't too concerned.

"I think compared to other cities, this is a pretty safe place," said Kai Tienmann, of Berlin, visiting with his son. "Of course anywhere in a safe city, can happen something like this. So much people here. A lot of police, also a lot of police cameras."

Twenty-eight-year-old Joseph Markey from Dublin said he wasn't worried.

"I'm from Dublin; there are a lot of shootings there," He said. "All the big cities have that problem."

Overall, crime in the city is still at record lows despite an uptick in murders, felony assaults and rapes in the first quarter of this year. Jittery lawmakers are worried about crime rising, especially as the ranks are decreased at the nation's largest police department.

"We need to get in front of this growing epidemic before we find ourselves reliving the bad old days of the 1970s," Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said.

There were no reports of tourists or business owners being attacked in the melee. Police weren't sure how many of those arrested knew each other or what sparked the shootings, which began shortly after midnight. Officers made arrests starting around 10:30 p.m. Sunday and continued into early Monday.

A man was shot in the ankle at Eighth Avenue and 40th Street around 12:10 a.m. Shortly after, a woman was hit with a BB gun several blocks northeast at Seventh Avenue and 51st Street. About two hours later, two women, both 19, were shot — one in the elbow and another in the thigh — near Seventh Avenue and 34th Street.

The woman hit with the BB gun was treated and released; the others were in stable condition, police said.
