Telsa and Toyota to work on electric RAV4

by AnneFleming 18. July 2010 22:44

From www.autoremarketing.com

PALO ALTO, Calif., and TOKYO — Telsa Motors and Toyota Motor Corp. officially signed an agreement late last week stemming from a May announcement. That's when they revealed collaboration toward development of an electric version of the Toyota RAV4.

Telsa's Elon Musk and Toyota's Akio Toyoda are aiming for their companies to bring an electric version of this vehicle to the U.S. market in 2012.

They indicated prototypes will be made combining the RAV4 model with a Tesla electric powertrain. Tesla plans to produce and deliver a fleet of prototypes to Toyota for evaluation within this year.

The companies indicated the first prototype has already been built and is now undergoing testing.

Back in May, Tesla and Toyota initially unveiled their intent to cooperate on the development of electric vehicles, parts and production system and engineering support.

Tesla maintains that it seeks to learn and benefit from Toyota's engineering, manufacturing and production expertise. Meanwhile, Toyota contends its objective is to discover more from Tesla's electric vehicle technology, daring spirit, quick decision-making and flexibility.

"Toyota has, since its foundation in 1937, operated under the philosophy of ‘contributing to society through the manufacture of automobiles,' and made cars that satisfy its many customers around the world," the automaker insisted.

Furthermore, Tesla reiterated that its intention is "to produce increasingly affordable electric cars for mainstream buyers — relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicles."

Beyond the RAV4 development, Tesla and Toyota became integrated in other ways, too.

The companies also revealed back in May that Toyota had agreed to purchase $50 million of Tesla's common stock issued in a private placement.

And in a related development, Tesla bought the former NUMMI factory in Fremont, Calif., a plant formerly utilized by Toyota. Tesla intends to build the Model S sedan and other future vehicles at the facility.

Smart USA Launches Color Customization Program

by AnneFleming 8. July 2010 01:09

From www.autoremarketing.com

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — smart USA Distributor LLC has introduced a new program that lets fortwo owners customize their rides through an "unlimited palette" of paint color options and various body wrap designs.

Through the smart Expressions offering, which was rolled out Wednesday, the entire smart USA network of dealers can help customers order custom exterior colors and wraps.

"smart Expressions builds on the innovative smart brand and empowers owners to be creative with their vehicle through a number of personalization choices," stated Jill Lajdziak, the president of smart USA. "The smart fortwo's interchangeable body panels make this unique level of customization possible, which is unmatched in the auto industry."

Instead of being limited to six factory colors previously available, owners can now choose from "an endless variety" of choices when it comes to the outside coloring of their ride.

Available are 93 PPG Aquabase Plus and Aquabase Plus Tri-Coat paint colors, which officials said are eco-friendly and waterborne-based.

Moreover, the Any Color You Want program lets owners bring a color swatch to the store so that they can get the exact shade they desire.

This allows owners to make their respective ride's color go with anything, whether it's the color of their favorite sports team, house, dog or favorite fashion accessory, just to name the examples smart gave.

There is also a lifetime limited paint performance guarantee.

As far as the wrap designs, the material consists of lamented 3M vinyl. Owners can choose from either a matte or gloss finish.

Owners can either pick from the pre-designed patterns already available or use their own creation.

Featured with the wrap is a three-year manufacturer warranty that covers fading, peeling and cracking. Also offered are partial vehicle wraps.

Customers can go to www.smartusa.com/smartexpressions for more information and to check out the design studio, where the various paint colors and wrap options can be seen.

Chevy to Expand Volt to More States

by AnneFleming 2. July 2010 00:54

From www.AutoRemarketing.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Chevrolet announced Thursday that it will expand the launch of the Volt into Texas, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Ed Whitacre, General Motors chairman and chief executive officer, indicated the company is enhancing the launch due to "intense interest" from Volt customers throughout the country.

The Volt's initial launch was originally slated to include California, Michigan and Washington, D.C., so now the new model will be going into seven markets.

The launch will occur in Texas and New York, beginning with Austin and New York City late this year. The rest of Texas and New York, along with New Jersey and Connecticut will begin receiving the vehicles in early 2011.

"We can add markets as diverse as Texas and New York because the Chevrolet Volt can handle both urban commuting and longer trips in Austin summers and Manhattan winters," explained Whitacre.

"The Volt can be your primary vehicle, giving you the freedom to drive gas-free without the stress of planning every trip around the battery's charge level," he added.

Tony DiSalle, Chevrolet Volt marketing director, noted, "Chevrolet is extending the Volt launch to additional states because of strong customer interest and our confidence in all aspects of the vehicle and battery."

According to the automaker, the Volt is capable of about 340 miles total driving range, with electricity driving the car at all times.

For trips as long as 40 miles, the Volt gets its power solely from electricity stored in its 16kWh lithium-ion battery. When the vehicle's battery runs low, an engine-generator is designed to engage and extend the driving range to about 300 miles on a full tank of gas.

A portable 120-volt vehicle cord that can recharge the vehicle using a standard residential outlet comes standard with every car. The model is designed to be charged from a standard 120-volt outlet in about nine to 10 hours, or from a standard 240-volt outlet in about three to four hours.

The first buyers of the Volt also may be eligible for one of 4,400 free 240-volt home charging stations from ECOtality Inc., or Coulomb Technologies, under a program administered by the U.S. Department of Energy and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Whitacre also announced that Chevy will add five Texas electric utilities and five Northeast utilities to a Department of Energy development and demonstration program that provides Volts and charging stations to key utilities. The program allows the utilities to study charging station installation process, vehicle charging and customer feedback. The Texas utilities include: Austin Energy, CenterPoint Energy, CPS Energy, Oncor and American Electric Power.

In the Northeast, Chevrolet is partnering with Con Edison, New York Power Authority, Northeast Utilities, National Grid and Public Service Electric and Gas.

Fueleconomy.gov's Most Fuel-Efficient Cars in America: 1984 - 2010

by AnneFleming 10. June 2010 10:08

Fueleconomy.gov has released two new top ten lists to help consumers purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/topten.jsp). Unlike other top ten lists that are limited to current model year vehicles, these new lists draw from twenty-six years of EPA and real-world fuel economy data, making them useful for consumers considering a new or used gas miser:

  1. Fueleconomy.gov’s Top Ten EPA-Rated Fuel Sippers (1984 to present)
  2. Fueleconomy.gov’s Top Ten Real-World Fuel Sippers (1984 to present)
The first list shows the most fuel efficient vehicles based on EPA fuel economy ratings, while the second list shows the most fuel efficient vehicles based on fuel economy estimates reported by fueleconomy.gov’s “Your MPG” members—ten members must provide estimates for a vehicle’s real-world mpg to be included in the list, and the list is updated weekly as new data are submitted from members.

It’s no surprise that hybrids top both lists, but it may come as a surprise that more than half of the vehicles on each list are not hybrids. Several small cars from the 1980s and 1990s fare well on both lists, and three diesel vehicles make the list based on driver-reported mpg.

A quick glance at the two lists also shows some interesting differences between the EPA estimates and the gas mileage reported by actual drivers. Several vehicles on the real-world list significantly outperformed EPA estimates. 2004-06 Honda Insight drivers averaged about 18 mpg better than the EPA estimate (70.4 mpg vs. 52 mpg), and all three diesel vehicles showed more than a 21-percent improvement in real-world driving over laboratory-based estimates. On the other hand, the average driver-reported estimates for some vehicles, such as the 2010 Toyota Prius, were much closer to the EPA ratings.

Please stay tuned as fueleconomy.gov will release more Top Ten lists in the near future.

Vehicles are ranked based on EPA's unrounded combined rating. In the event of a tie, multiple vehicles may share the same ranking. Only the most efficient configuration of a particular model is presented for a given rank—variants of a ranked model are listed as "similar models" if they would have otherwise made the list. Models classified under different EPA size classes, however, are ranked separately.  Fueleconomy.gov’s Top Ten Real-World Fuel Sippers (1984 to present)

10.   Volkswagen New Beetle Model Years 1998-20034 cyl, 1.9L, Manual 5-spd, Diesel User Average: 46.2(47 vehicles) EPA Combined: 38
Vehicles are ranked based on fuel economy records provided by our users through our Your MPG feature. Vehicles are only ranked if ten or more drivers submitted fuel economy estimates. If a model has variants that are nearly identical (e.g., same number of cylinders, engine displacement, transmission, fuel type, and EPA combined fuel economy rating), those records are combined and averaged. Variants that are not similar enough to be combined are included under "similar models" if they would have otherwise made the list. Only the most efficient configuration of a particular model is presented for a given rank. This list is updated weekly as new data are submitted by Your MPG members.

IRVINE, Calif. — Editors with Kelley Blue Book's Kbb.com released this week what they consider to be the 2010 Top 10 Road Trip Cars.

In a new theme for this year, Kbb.com picked 10 "road trip-worthy" events happening this summer around the U.S. and then matched them each with a specific ride that best suited the particular trip.

Kbb.com said the road-trip events are as diverse as the road-trip models.

"We decided to kick it up a notch this year with our annual Kbb.com Top 10 Road Trip Cars list, identifying many of the most interesting summer festivals, events and gatherings from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and then brainstorming the best car for each trip," stated Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kbb.com.

"Since our editorial staff has collectively driven nearly every vehicle available on the U.S. market, we had fun narrowing down the choices and deciding which ride best corresponded to each destination," he added. "The resulting list is comprehensive in its variety and appeal, offering 10 great choices for motorists of various generations and interests who want to hit the open road this summer."

The following is a synopsis of Kbb.com's list of summer road trips — listed in chronological order — and their corresponding vehicles.
