Pittsburgh Steelers Arrive at Training Camp in MINI's

by AnneFleming 31. July 2010 13:24

Story re-printed from the www.pittsburghpost-gazette.com

LATROBE -- The big guys have a thing for the little cars.

Last year, outside linebacker James Harrison arrived at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe for training camp driving a white SmartCar and took coach Mike Tomlin for a ride. This year, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and his offensive line rolled up to the dorm in MINI Coopers.

Harrison drove a black Lincoln sedan Friday, but cars were in the minority. Most players arrived in large sport utility vehicles with tinted windows. Defensive lineman Chris Hoke drove a gray Mercedes, and inside linebackers James Farrior and Larry Foote both arrived in SUVs.

One of the few cars to rookie wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, a third-round draft pick from Southern Methodist. Sanders drove a white Mercedes CLS 550, which he called his dream car. He has had it three months.

"I said when I make it that's the car I was going to get and I got the opportunity to get it, so I got it," he said.

Wide receiver Stefan Logan drove a black Dodge Charger with gray stripes.

"I have a nice thing with cars," he said. "I like cars, toys, stuff like that. I left my truck back in Pittsburgh and brought my car up here."

Logan has had the Charger for about six months and got it because he wanted a change from his truck.

"I wanted something to drive every day and I don't normally drive my truck all the time," he said. "I normally just put it in the garage. I liked the Charger, I thought it was a nice car. If you get one, you got to make sure you get one with a Hemi [engine] in it."

Sanders and Logan both began a new experience Friday. Sanders is in his first NFL training camp but spent the last month in Pittsburgh preparing for it. He ran routes and caught passes from Roethlisberger and quarterback Charlie Batch and also studied the playbook.

"I saw it as an advantage. I had the film room, I had the coaches, I had the athletic training," he said. "I had [conditioning coordinator Garrett Giemont], who's been training guys going on 27 years. That's kind of the reason why I did it."

Logan spent most of last season, his rookie year, as a kick-returner and special-teams player. This year, he said, he is preparing to see more time as a running back and wide receiver.

"You got to keep your thoughts and plays in mind when you're a receiver as far as what you've got to do, reading defenses," he said regarding the philosophy change needed to play receiver.

"Coach Tomlin, he just wants to see how much I can handle. I'm willing to take on that challenge and show what I can do."

And with that he entered the dorm, along with the other players leaving their dark Tahoes and Yukons parked on the curb.

Logan also has a Tahoe, but said his is the best on the team.

"It's all white, got 26 [inch rims] on it. It's what I call the cocaine white, it's ready to go. Coming from Miami that's how we do it," the south Florida native joked.

Sanders likes his teammates' wheels, but keeps them in perspective.

"I'll take everybody on my team's car," he said. "Everybody has a nice car. But a car's just a car at the same time."

Unless it's your dream car.

Transgressions Come Clean: Tiger Woods vs. David Letterman

by AnneFleming 4. December 2009 00:45

So, when it comes to public figures having personal transgressions, what is the better way to come clean? The Tiger Woods or David Letterman route? Specifically, does one hide out, avoid, use euphemisms, and, for the first time in 12 years not want to be interviewed? Or, do you jump in front of the camera and belt it out in the very best medium called prime time television?

One process leads to questions, stigma, curiosity, rumor mills and drama, drama, drama. And, Google, Google, Google.

The other leads to more of an assessment on the delivery and perhaps, slightly less focus on the transgression itself.

By the way, is it a transgression if you have an affair for roughly 25% of the time you have been married, or, is it simply a behavior? Mmmmm….

Tiger has been photographed like, 1 billion times – about as many times as his net worth - and been interviewed what, like, 371,451 times? He is familiar with the tabloids; after all, he and his wife showcased and sold the story and photographs of the birth of their first child to PEOPLE (my fave) and other high paying tabloids. Now, these very same journalistic mediums, and his bff Oprah, want to hear the real story. We always want the story. He now wants nothing to do with his famous stature. Refusing to talk to anyone. Leaving more stories about the story than the story itself.

David created his livelihood in the television industry, but doesn’t hold nearly the notoriety of Tiger. Nonetheless, his approach was very different: be quick and beat 'em to the punch. He went very public ASAP after disclosing his affair to his wife. Then, everyone from the AP to Esquire.com could simply tell the aftermath, without the speculation, gossip, and remarkable innuendo.

What ever way of coming clean - one extreme or the other – or, some version in between, the story always comes out. Even post mortem. Ain't that right, Mr. Jefferson?

Here is to life and love.

Jill & Kevin's Wedding Dance - Funk it Up and Say I Do

by AnneFleming 24. July 2009 08:44

How inspiring. How unabashed. How fully self-expressed.

On their day of declaration and public committment, Jill & Kevin's entrance and wedding dance, as seen on the You tube link below, was inspiring. Heads may have turned. What looked to have the makings of a traditional summer wedding with the organ music about to begin took a mighty turn. Tisk tisk. Not in the Lord's house is there music like this and surely not at a wedding! Dear me!

A generous Jay Z or Justin would say they had nothing on this couple from Minnesota as they and their wedding party busted moves unseen in any Church. Busted moves not seen in any religious gathering. And busted moves that had Grandma tapping her toes and clapping her hands.

How is that for stepping outside the box? How is that for being unabashed? How is that for laying down some funk on your way to say "I do"?  And, how is that for having a blast and ensuring that no-one, no-one would fall asleep during their ceremony. How is that for doing it the way you want to? And Jill got to wear her traditional, beautiful white dress.

Married or not, in a relationship or not - wouldn't you just for a moment want to have a procession like that? I sure would!

Hit the link and turn up the volume and get your mouth ready for a grin and some song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0

Jill & Kevin - here's to you and your new life together! Your wedding dance down the aisle may just give Susan Boyle a run for video hits.

Rock it Out in the Car

by AnneFleming 12. April 2009 15:43

You know you do it. You are riding in your car jamming to XM radio and “your new most favorite song” comes on. You love this song, and no, it’s not ‘Your Song’ by Elton John.

It’s 'your song', the-one-that-you-don’t-really-know-all-the-words-to-but- that-is-never-gonna-stop-you-from-belting-it-out-in-your-car-like-you-are-some-kinda-hot rap-rock-star-jamming-at-the-mike-for-your-40,000-fans.

Only there is one slight problem. When we don’t really have no idea the words that the artist is singing, do we stop singing? I think not! We simply make up some word(s) of our own. And then, even after we are corrected, say by a good, dear friend, sister or relative, who hear us sing those words, and laugh their heads off at us... we continue using the words we made up. Over and over. Here are some of my favorites.

Virgin, Virgin, it’s an emergency…sing to ‘Urgent’ by Foreigner

My Eyes of Georgia …sing to “My Eyes Adored You” by Isaac Hayes

You can Play Secretary on My Bosch Tonight...sing to "You can play secretary Im the boss tonight” in Stronger by Kanye West

My Woman is a-k-o ...sing to ”My woman from Tokyo” by Deep Purple

Mow the Lawn, Mow the Lawn...sing to “Move Along” by All American Rejects

Loving it in La Vita...sing to “Love in an Elevator" by Aerosmith

The good news? Check out this video and know that we all do this. Click and enjoy!

Christian Bale and Our Human-ness

by AnneFleming 7. February 2009 13:04

The number of viral impressions each and every day is in the billions. We upload photos of ourselves, homegrown videos, and tell the blososhpere community about our great and sassy lives and attributes. On the many online social and dating networks we spin ourselves, how "awesome" we are, and our looks (only put up our best photos), and how great everything is. Exaggate? No! Well, maybe just a tad.

Notice on a recent date or interview when asked about our strengths we can talk about ourselves non-stop and leave no stone unturned. When it comes to us - humans have the capacity to talk incesently.  The other person then asks for areas where we get tripped up or about our “weaknesses or shortcomings” – and, our answer is 42 seconds in length. And, as a society we are coached and get tips on how to minimize or spin our weaknesses into a remarkable positive attributes. Spin sayers and people players – that is what we do. “Looking good” till the cows come home.

So, isn’t it just perfect when such a hot and high profile movie star like Christian Bale  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Bale

has a dramatic meltdown, a hissy fit, a rant like no other, a YOU’VE -GOT-TO-TAKE-A-TIMEOUT-NOW moment? Well, in Christian's case, make that moments. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29056200/ . We watch this clip and declare “What the F is wrong with that guy?" "He’s got all the money in the world; what a baby!" "He should be grateful; we are paying for his meal ticket." "I am not going to anymore of his movies.”  Or... some version of these statements.

(Heck, even his sister says he needs help. And, maybe an anger management class or getting fired from the set could very well be in order for Mr. Bale!)

But the rest of us sit back and send the video to our friends, or post a blog about it in our www.Facebook.com  or www.Myspace.com and blah blah blah about our judgments and opinions about this guy. The once hottie you had it for, suddenly gets dismissed and his photos deleted from your folio.

When are we under the microscope? Who watches us when in the privacy of our home we get triggered? Who watches our meltdowns and our yelling or our tantrums? When are we out for all human and viral consumption?

The numbers are compelling – half of all marriages end; and the divorce lawyers are making ga-gillions. So, you think these relationships are ending amicably? If there is sex or money or children involved, I think not. Maybe during a divorce, or, even a “happy marriage”  -  a voice inflection (or two), a mild melt-down (or three), or even a scatological word (or four) might have come out of your mouth. But, is your $%^&@# tirade caught on tape? Frankly, Usually, Like Almost Never, No.

Remember your last blow up or melt down? You know the one....when you just HAD to have just that one extra glass of wine? Can we not just give each other a break before rushing to judgement? Our human-ness is the same for all 6.7 billion of us … how we act and react to our environment and its' triggers does differ, but we all have been miffed or angered many, many times. And yes, for even the most mundance and stupid reasons.

Today, go and be gentle with yourself and generous with others. In traffic, don’t be so stingy for god's sake… you getting to your destination one-half of a nanosecond sooner will not have a cosmic variance on the history of the world.

Anne
