There's a reason that shocking yellow and lime green cars stand out in the herd moving along the nation's highways. PPG Inc.'s latest update on automotive color trends find white is the most popular color for 2011 model-year cars in the world, followed by silver and black.
North American cars aren't much different, according to the company's data, with 20 percent done up in white, 19 percent in silver and 18 percent in black. In fourth place, gray with 15 percent. All other colors -- the reds, blues, browns, greens, etc. -- did not exceed 10 percent each on 2011 cars.
Europeans will find black on 26 percent of 2011 models, white on 19 percent and silver on 16 percent. In the Asia/Pacific region, silver takes the lead at 25 percent, with white in second place at 23 percent and black at 17 percent.
PPG, which makes automotive coatings, is offering car designers 70 new shades to choose from for 2014-15 models -- colors such as Muddy Waters ("brown with a pearl luster") and Pot O'Gold ("a light green with a hint of gold").
So don't expect things to get too crazy out there anytime soon.
